Body image activist Taryn Brumfitt has been named the 2023 Australian of the Year for her work encouraging people to feel more comfortable in their own skin.

The South Australian documentarian’s film Embrace tackles body shaming and focused on her own path to body acceptance.

She says she wants to use her new platform to raise awareness of the issue and has already asked to speak with the Prime Minister about what she calls the “universal problem” of body shaming.

More than a thousand Australians have been recognised on the Australia Day Honours list today.

Of those awarded, 48 per cent are women.

It’s the highest percentage since the honours system began in 1975.

Aboriginal musician Archie Roach has been posthumously made a Companion of the Order (AC) in this year’s awards.

Lieutenant General John Frewen, who oversaw the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, has also been recognised.

Actor David Wenham has been made a Member of the Order (AM), while actress Claudia Karvan is an Order of Australia (OAM) recipient.

Chef and TV personality Kylie Kwong and health commentator Dr Norman Swan have both received Member of the Order (AM) awards.
