Astrophysicists ‘keeping tabs’ as massive asteroid hurtles past Earth
An asteroid, estimated to be around a kilometre wide, has had a close brush past Earth.
Asteroid 7482 (1994 PC1) came within 1.9 million kilometres of our planet and has since moved further out to space.
It’s the closest 7482 will come to Earth for the next two centuries.
“It’s the class of asteroid we like to keep tabs on and monitor,” astrophysicist Brad Tucker told Scott Emerson.
“They go around the sun … in this other weird circle that sometimes crosses the path of Earth, or at least gets close to it.
“We like to make sure we’re not at the same point in space at the same time because, well, that doesn’t end well for Earth!”
