Alcohol restrictions to be introduced to stem Alice Springs crime wave

4bc news

New restrictions on the sale of alcohol will be introduced in Alice Springs as part of the federal government’s response to a sharp increase in criminal activity.

Millions of dollars in federal funding will also be rolled out for community organisations, police operations and emergency accommodation.

Takeaway liquor sales will be immediately banned between Sunday and Tuesday in the remote town.

Locals will also be limited to one bottle-shop transaction a day.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese flew to the Northern Territory today after facing pressure from communities and local authorities to tackle the growing law and order problem.

He has been meeting with local officials and Indigenous groups.

Mr Albanese says there are a range of issues driving the increased in violence and crimes.

“The Mayor certainly put forward that it was an issue of youth crime, as well as issues related to alcohol,” he said.

“But also there were issues related to employment, opportunity, issues that were about service delivery and service hubs, and investment in communities.”

A longer-term alcohol ban is also under consideration.
