‘Absolutely insane’: South-east snake catchers run off their feet

Dean & Sofie

Snake catchers are being run off their feet as the south-east swelters through a series of hot and sticky days.

There’s been a surge in activity among the south-east’s snake populations, which prefer high temperatures and humidity.

“It was absolutely insane last night,” Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers owner Stuart McKenzie told Laurel, Gary & Mark. “It was probably one of the busiest, busiest nights we’ve ever had.

Residents are warned to steer clear of the scaly visitors after a father tragically died from a suspected venomous snakebite in the Lockyer Valley at the weekend.

“They’ll only get agitated if people go close. If you leave them alone, they’ll 100 per cent leave you alone.

“It’s when people go too close, or try and catch them or hurt them or something like that.”
