‘Absolutely first class’: British RAF marks 100 years in the air

The British Royal Air Force has reached a major milestone, celebrating 100 years in the air.

To mark the centenary, 100 planes from the RAF fleet will fly over Buckingham Palace in full view of the royal family and spectators.

“This, as they would say in the better parts of London, is absolutely first class,” Michael McLaren says.

Air Commodore Richard Barrow is the brains behind tomorrow’s flypast, telling Michael the force has transformed since its foundation in 1918.

“For what we’ve achieved, from basically airplanes made out of wire and wood, to what we’ve got in the service now, is just an incredible rate of change.”

The task, Richard says, is monumental. But the operation will be spectacular.

“It’s probably one of the most exciting things that I’ve done in my career so far and certainly one of the most unusual.”
