‘A lot of rain’: Authorities left frustrated by rescues in flood waters
Queenslanders are being urged not to get complacent amid the latest heavy rain, just weeks from the flood emergency in the south-east.
Tragically, a man died near Toowoomba yesterday, the 14th flood-related death in the south-east in six weeks.
Queensland Police also confirmed a 47-year-old Pittsworth man died following an extensive search operation in flood waters at North Branch in the Southern Downs.
QFES director of the specialist and technical response branch, Brad Commens, says the last flood event was only a month ago.
“We’ve had a lot of rain, it was 200mm in a lot of places on the Gold Coast last night, and 340 mm at Tallebudgera so certainly a lot in a 24 hour period.
“Most of our [emergency] responses over the last 24 hours have been swift water rescues.
“We have unusually had a number of house fires as well, normal business continues on.
“We’ve had 8 calls in the last 24 hours until 3pm this afternoon … and previously to that we have had quite a few calls, we’ve also had 267 calls for assistance from the SES as well.”
He’s issued a warning for people not to be complacent once again.
“We’ve had many rescues of people that shouldn’t have needed to be rescued … our public needs to realise just because the rain has gone that it’s not safe to drive through flood waters.”
