An elderly man has died and his wife has been hospitalised following a tragic crash at Coorparoo.

The man suffered a medical episode while driving with his wife along Old Cleveland Road.

The dual cab ute swerved, hit the gutter and crashed into several shops before flipping on its side.

Members of the public rushed to help, managing to lift the car back upright before pulling the man and his wife from the wreckage.

They attempted to perform CPR on the man but couldn’t resuscitate him.

Macquarie National News Reporter Anthony Laughton was on the scene and saw the woman being taken to hospital where she is being treated.

Queensland Police Inspector Adam Muir says the man’s family were able to farewell the man before he passed.

“Unfortunately, some really really bad news. The driver has been pronounced dead at the scene.

“His wife and son were here as well and they certainly got to say their goodbyes before he left, so a very sad set of circumstances.”

Police have praised the heroic efforts of bystanders who attempted to save the man’s life.

“They’ve done a fantastic job and I’d like to acknowledge all those people involved in this crash.”
