‘More than just football’ – Why Australia needs to do more to win over the Pacific

Michael McLaren has unpacked how the PNG deal is more than just an attempt to build the NRL internationally as China attempts to strengthen its grip on the Asia-Pacific region.
His comments come after the PNG Foreign Minister “rebuked” Australia’s position on Taiwan at the Pacific Islands Forum in Palau.
“If this is Port Moresby’s new official position on the question of Taiwan, it shows a remarkable synergy with the Beijing script,” he said.
“We are in a fight for the hearts and minds of Pacific leaders here, and it’s no certainty which way they’ll jump,” he added.
