A growing and ageing population could see cemetery space in Queensland run out in as little as 10 to 15 years.

4BC Mornings host Jason Matthews has urged the Queensland state government to get “off its backside” to develop a state-wide strategy and make cremation the “obvious choice” to avoid using too much land on cemeteries.

“It’s time to stop defaulting to burial and start embracing cremation, maybe,” Matthews said.

“Cremation is cheaper, easier to manage, and gives families the flexibility to honour their loved one in a place that actually meant something to them.”
