WWOS producer Maddy Callander on the significance of the Beanie for Brain Cancer round

Peter Psaltis

WWOS producer Maddy Callander has opened up to Peter Psaltis on the significance of the Beanies for Brain Cancer round after her father Matt Callander, former Channel 9 NRL executive, lost his battle with the illness.

She revealed the cause, with the help of the Mark Hughes Foundation has raised over $30 million in the last nine years.

“I am blown away by the support of the Rugby League community, and us having the opportunity to have my dad’s legacy live on each year, so we’re very proud of what we’ve achieved,” he said.

“Brain cancer kills more people under 40 than any other cancer. Sadly, I’ve been on the wrong end of that stat … it just brings me so much joy that something like this has been born from that,” she added.

“Money equals research, and research equals a cure, so we will not stop until that happens”.
