‘Complicated region’: The latest out of the Middle East

A ceasefire between Israel and Iran is now in place after confusion following US President Donald Trump’s announcement earlier today.

Research scholar at Australia National University’s centre for Arab and Islamic studies, Ian Parmeter, says the Middle East is a complicated region.

“It’s a very difficult region to ever have any optimism about in the long term, but I think we can be very glad that President Trump has been able to broker this ceasefire,” he told Gary Hardgrave.

He notes, however, that ceasefires in the region are very fragile and the situation is far from over.
