‘Long time coming’: Coercive control laws to come into place from today

Sofie Formica

Domestic Violence advocates say today has been a “long time coming” with coercive control laws in Queensland to be enforced from today.

General Manager of Challenge DV, Linda Smith, says the new laws will also help with education and awareness.

“This can be a very confusing topic for people to understand, and really getting the awareness and education out there on how to recognise that, and how to safely help someone who might be experiencing that,” she told Sofie Formica.

Founder of BLAQ Diamonds, Melisa Drummond-Anderson, says there’s a lot of work still to be done, including within the Indigenous community to increase awareness.

“Especially in the community … I think it’s about demonstrating that we’re actually taking action,” she added.
