The Queensland government has announced a commission of inquiry into the state’s child safety system which is failing children in residential care, costing $1.12 billion.

According to latest census, in Brisbane more than 12,000 children are in out-of-home care and over 2,200 residential care.

More than 100 of the states most serious youth offenders are living in care alongside thousands of vulnerable children.

Child Safety Minister Amanda Camm told Sofie Formica on 4BC Afternoons, “My biggest concern is their length of placement, those children aged 0-4 years, their average placement in residential care is 186 days.”

“My focus and the direction I’ve given my department in regards to those children under 12 years, I certainly want a transition to family- based care. ” Camm continued.
