Subaru’s small Crosstrek SUV 1

DAVID BERTHON

The small Subaru XV SUV arrived in 2012 and quickly carved out a strong
following, the third generation arrived a few months back with a new name the
Crosstrek and its been very well received. Now available in three petrol and two
hybrid all-wheel drive models underpinned with new technology and a revised
platform but featuring the old 2.0-litre non-turbo flat four engine linked to a
continuously variable automatic transmission, now with 8 speed paddle shift
manual mode. Prices up, the base 2.0-litre Subaru Crosstrek L from $34,990, up
$1,800 on the previous entry XV. I drove this model plus the top non-hybrid 2.0-
litre Crosstrek S at $41,490. Whilst the drivetrain hasn’t changed Subaru has
added a number of technical elements and performance refinements in a revised
body with sharper lines, a new grille, more convenience features including a large
11.6-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone charging and wireless Apple CarPlay
and Android Auto connectivity. Also gaining Subaru’s excellent Eyesight driver
assist technology with new cameras and retaining the company’s X-mode
Symmetrical all-wheel drive system – the small Crosstrek perfect for light off-
roading and more than capable. But for the most part the Subaru Crosstrek as a
city slicker is a very safe surefooted all-wheel drive small SUV. Drive details next
segment. I’m David Berthon
