Do new cars have too much tech for their own good?

DAVID BERTHON

It’s a complaint I hear quite often but many new car buyers are struggling to
come to terms with the complexities of screen-based car functions and their
multiple menus. A recent U.S. J.D. Power new car owners survey showed owners
are becoming increasingly disgruntled with the amount of unnecessary
technology in their car. The latest survey detailing the dissatisfaction mostly
related to in-car tech and more specifically the infotainment system. It’s a point I
make often where it’s illegal to use a handheld phone yet infotainment screens
are becoming more and more complex and are a real driver distraction. Simply
adjusting the volume or changing the radio station or adjusting the air con can
lead to several touch functions and take your eyes off the road – as
manufacturers do away with switches and buttons that can be operated simply by
feel. I’m David Berthon
