Driver education in need of an overhaul

David Berthon

Whilst Harold Scruby from the Pedestrian Council doesn’t like Chris Minns’ proposal to offer a one demerit point reduction for good driving, I personally think any such effort to improve driving standards is a good one.

From my observations, the overall driving standard has dropped over the last 10 years. Today NSW has a rapidly growing vehicle population and with migration targets set to increase it’s going to grow even faster. Quite clearly driver education and testing of new arrivals is not where it needs to be.

Also whilst many older drivers may think they’re beyond reproach behind the wheel it’s simply not good enough for drivers to be assessed for his or her driving knowledge and capability until they turn 85. As for Harold Scruby, he needs to spend more time improving poor pedestrian behaviour instead of always blaming the motorist.
