‘Never seen anything like it’: Dozens of hammerheads gather at Burleigh

Gold Coast surfers have been treated to some extraordinary close encounters with critically endangered sharks in recent weeks. 

It’s estimated a hundred scalloped hammerheads have been congregating in the water at Burleigh Heads.

Laurel Collofello, who managed to film the sharks while out paddleboarding, told Luke Bradnam she’s “never seen anything like it”.

“They’ve been there since about February 16,” she said. “They are juvenile, … my guess is they’re anywhere between three to five-foot and they are growing.

“We have notice they have grown in the time they’ve been there!”
