‘A cause for concern’: Dangerous pest spreads to Stradbroke Island

Dean & Sofie

There are concerns for North Stradbroke Island tourism after a destructive species of ant spread to the region.

More than 20 red fire ant nests have been found on the island, also known as Minjerribah, across three properties in Dunwich.

Invasive Species Council spokesperson Reece Pianta told Laurel, Gary & Mark investigations are ongoing to determine how the ants spread to the island.

“It is a cause for concern and people should be a little bit more alert as to what they’ve got that they’re carrying from place to place at the moment.”
