‘Unacceptable, unlawful’: Alleged stabbing death sparks calls for crackdown

Dean & Sofie

There are calls for a crackdown on knife crime in Queensland following the fatal stabbing of a 20-year-old man in Logan.

Aiden Rhys Bower-Miles was allegedly stabbed in the neck by two teenagers during an altercation at Underwood early Friday morning.

Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith told Laurel, Gary & Mark it’s a tragedy.

“Carrying knives is not only unacceptable but it’s unlawful,” he said.

“The consequences of their actions, a split-second decision, can change the lives of many for the rest of their lives.”

He said police already have the power to stop and search people suspected of carrying a weapon.

“The Gold Coast had a very successful trial with the wanding and that removed the need for suspicion,” he said.

“During that trial, we seized 250 weapons. That is now before parliament.”
