‘Long way in front’: Attorney-General defends QLD’s pokies restrictions

neil breen

Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman says Queensland is “a long way in front” of NSW and the state’s pokies plan to make all gaming machines cashless by 2028.

The pokies reform is a major intervention from the NSW government and their plan to address the harm caused by problem gambling.

Attorney-General: The reforms announced in NSW are significant, but I really want to made the point up front that we are a long way in front of NSW and they are really playing catch-up.

Neil: How are we in front?

Attorney-General: The number of machines. We have a cap on the number of policies in Queensland, currently we have 40,000. NSW, their cap is 99,000.

She said people can only put $100 in a machine in Queensland, and a maximum bet of $5 as opposed to $10 in NSW.

“We already have some pretty good restrictions here in Queensland when it comes to pokies.”
