Death toll passes 7000 after Türkiye, Syria earthquakes
The death toll from powerful earthquakes on the border of Türkiye and Syria has risen past 7000.
The figure is expected to double in the coming days as desperate rescue operations continue.
Volunteers and rescue workers are spending a second night searching for survivors in freezing conditions.
It comes as Türkiye’s President Recep Erdoğan declares a three-month state of emergency.
Red Cross director of international programs Alex Mathison told Laurel & Mark now is the time for the international community to help.
“It’s going to require effort way beyond the capability of the local communities and humanitarian organisations and authorities there,” he said.
“That’s why we are calling on Australians to support the effort through launching an appeal, which people can access through going to redcross.org.au.”
