Federal Agriculture Minister Murray Watt admits it has been slow to roll out flood assistance to south-east Queensland following the severe February flood event.

Both state and the federal governments were criticised as some home owner complained of red tape and long delays.

But Senator Watt said while it “took a bit of time to get up and running” there has been a lot of progress.

“I am pleased to say that there have now been offers accepted by over 100 south-east Queensland homeowners, to buy back their properties,” he told Peter Fegan.

“And there are many more that are in negotiation.

“From memory we have settled now about 20-30 purchases.”

He has been advised in recent days that over 4000 people are in negotiation for some kind of support, whether that’s home buyback, raising or helping to flood-proof.
