A man from interstate has drowned and a young boy has been rescued on the Gold Coast.

The alarm was raised by a member of the public who was on the beach at Surfers Paradise and by an occupant of a high-rise building around 7pm last night.

The pair were pulled from the water but sadly the man in his 40s couldn’t be revived.

The 11-year-old boy was taken Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

Chief lifeguard Chris Maynard said the incident happened around Surfers Paradise.

Lifeguards had gotten everyone out of the water and had only just left the area.

“We believe after they have left the beach area around 6.50pm, we believe a father and an 11-year-old has gone in for a quick swim and got into difficulty,” he told Spencer Howson.

A lifeguard who had finished up at a beach nearby was waved down by a member of the public, and he was able to rescue the 11-year-old.

CPR was administered to the man but sadly he couldn’t be revived.

“It was a tragedy all round, the conditions in the ocean have been quite dangerous.”

He warned that conditions are dangerous, and they will close beaches if needed.

“Don’t take that risk swimming outside of patrol hours, if we can’t see you we can’t save you.”
