Constable Randall Kirk is recovering in hospital after being injured in an ambush at Wieambilla that killed two of his colleagues.

Four officers, including Constable Kirk, were attending the rural property over a missing person report when they were met by a hail of gunfire on Monday afternoon.

Constable Rachel McCrow and Constable Matthew Arnold, were shot dead, while Constables Kirk and Keeley Brough miraculously managed to escape.

The Queensland Police Union has released a photo of Constable Kirk recovering in hospital with his pregnant wife by his side.

He has undergone extensive surgery to remove shrapnel from his leg but is recovering well.

“Randall and Bree have been overwhelmed by the messages of support from everyone from the Prime Minister down,” a statement from the family read.

“Randall is recovering well from surgery and wants to thank all the public who are showing support for the Queensland Police.”

Constable Kirk said he’s feeling well, “just a little sore”, and his main thoughts are with the families of his fallen colleagues.

“It means a lot to know the community cares for us all.

“My wife and I have a young family and would appreciate privacy as we come to terms with this.”
