AFL team based out of Hobart a step closer to reality

neil breen

The AFL and the Tasmanian government have reached an in-principle agreement for a 19th team based out of Hobart, bringing the long-held dream a step closer to reality.

The 19th licence needs existing clubs to sign off and federal funding for a new roofed stadium in Hobart.

The state government has committed to fund half of the $750 million stadium in the city’s waterfront.

Neil Breen said it had been a long-time coming, and made a prediction for the AFL into the future – that the league won’t stop at 19 teams.

“It’s already too many at 18.”

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan wouldn’t be drawn on a timeline for the team, but said the AFL was having productive discussions with existing clubs.
