Queensland again the divorce capital as rates rise across the country

Carla Bignasca

Queensland has again taken out the title of divorce capital as divorce rates rise across Australia.

There were 56,244 divorces granted in 2021, up by 13.6 per cent, or around 7000 on previous years.

The Sunshine State saw a 2.6 divorces per 1000 people, followed by Western Australia at 2.2.

Gold Coast-based family mediator Stacey Turner told Sofie Formica the pandemic put a lot of added pressure on relationships.

“I saw two different waves in my practice,” she said. “I was busiest during those lockdown periods because I think people were looking at life differently.

“The second is certainly the after-effects of COVID have caused unusual stresses that we didn’t see before.”
