Why households are about to get a discount on their water bills

4bc news

More than a million households will receive a discount on their water bills as the state government readies up for storm season.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has this morning announced Seqwater will begin releasing water from Wivenhoe dam for two weeks, starting this Saturday.

116,000 megalitres of water will be safely released to reduce levels from 90 per cent to 80 per cent.

Ms Palaszczuk said during this time the government will reduce water bills for all south-east Queensland households connected to the water grid.

The discount will allow for the use of 13,200 litres of free water for each home, which is around double the normal household usage for a fortnight.

It means approximately 1.38 million homes will see a $55 discount on their water bills.

“It’s time for families in South East Queensland to wash down your cars, driveway, maybe even your house, as we safely reduce dam levels ahead of storm season,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
