The federal government says petrol prices shouldn’t “shoot up at the bowser” when the fuel tax excise returns to normal next week.

The excise was halved for six months to combat soaring petrol prices, but will return to its normal level from next Thursday.

Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers has warned service stations and suppliers not to treat Australians “like mugs” and said the consumer watchdog will be watching the fuel companies caught price gouging when the relief ends.

He said the government and ACCC expect it won’t rise by the full 23 cents a litre.

Compare the Market’s Chris Ford advised motorists to use the comparison apps to get the best price.

“There’s going to be games that will be played, the message is for consumers and motorists, get the power in your own hand, vote with your feet and get to those stations that have cheaper prices at the pump,” he told Peter Fegan, filling in on Brisbane Live.
