Crowds burst into song as Queen returns to Buckingham Palace

Peter Fegan

Thousands of people have stood in the rain outside the gates of Buckingham Palace to witness the Queen’s coffin arrive home.

Her Majesty has been flown on a Royal Air Force plane from Scotland to London as mourners lined the streets from the airbase to the city’s centre.

Many more are expected in the capital tomorrow for the procession to Westminster Hall where the lying in state will begin.

A huge policing operation is also underway.

UK correspondent Adam Gilchrist told Laurel, Gary & Mark people are slowly coming to terms with the Queen’s passing.

“It’s 10 miles, 12miles, something like that and all along that route, people were cheering and applauding and in some cases, bursting out with a bit of national anthem.

“It was a very noisy kind of tribute and I don’t think that’s a London thing, I think maybe just five days on, we’re beginning to evolve the way we’re remembering the Queen.”
