Premier to head housing crisis talks where ‘nothing is off the table’

Annastacia Palaszczuk will chair a landmark summit to address Queensland’s housing crisis where she promises “nothing is off the table”.
Talks will begin with a roundtable of government and non-government stakeholders this Friday ahead of the Queensland Housing Summit next month.
“We all know that recent interest rate increases by the independent Reserve Bank of Australia have made it tough for homeowners,” Premier Palaszczuk said.
“All levels of government have a role to play in improving the current housing situation.”
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, Housing Minister Leeanne Enoch and Deputy Premier Steven Miles will be among the elected officials at this week’s roundtable.
A number of stakeholders and advocates will also be in attendance, including from Q Shelter, the Local Government Association of Queensland and Master Builders.
Dr Miles said a “compounding set of circumstances” is to blame for a housing crisis in the south-east.
“Queensland’s population grew by almost 750,000 between 2011 and 2021, with close to 90 per cent in south-east Queensland,” he said.
“Massive population growth, supply chain and workforce restraints and multiple weather events have created a housing challenge.”
The talks will address unlocking land and housing supply, fast tracking social housing and the need for collaboration on housing by all levels of government and the private sector.
Sofie Formica praised the state government for taking an open-minded approach to solving the crisis.
“It’s not going to be a one-solution-fits-all and we need to be doing things in the short-term that will make a difference to people,” she said.
