Vaccination data from aged care homes to be made public

Residential vaccination rates at aged care homes are being made public from today, in a bid to drive up booster rates in high-risk settings.

The figures will be published on the Department of Health and Aged Care website.

It’s designed to further drive-up the number of people receiving a fourth dose.

It comes as authorities warn against complacency in Queensland with over 51,000 active cases, 783 people in hospitals and 24 in intensive care with COVID-19.

New data also revealed more than 40 residents in aged care died with the virus, half in the last week of July alone.

Federal health data shows 231 active outbreaks in nursing homes, representing nearly half of the total number of aged care facilities in the state.

Director of Infectious Diseases at Mater Health, Dr Paul Griffin, says understanding the data improves the responses.

“There are probably certain reasons that certain areas might be doing worse than others, I hope it’s all about finding where the challenges might be and specifically addressing them so that everyone has the opportunity to have high vaccination rates.

“We need to do much more for the aged care sector, it’s really clear it’s the high risk setting with the virus and we haven’t achieved levels of control in those settings that I think we can and we definitely should.”

Responding calls to re-introduce a mask mandate, Dr Griffin says he’d like to see masks handed out at high-risk settings and educating people about the benefit of wearing them.
