Gold Coast homeless in the spotlight after bold idea from councillor
A Gold Coast councillor has floated a bold idea to tackle the homeless issue facing the region, suggesting the vagrancy act could be re-introduced.
On the Gold Coast, it’s estimated around 1700 people living rough.
Speaking on 4BC Afternoons, Cr Brooke Patterson explained she is hearing that there is a small, select group of people who are “causing a lot of trouble” that service providers refuse to house.
She said there’s not enough crisis accommodation on the Gold Coast.
“First of all it would be good if the state government built enough crisis accommodation, but the concern is, well what then?” she said.
“The problem is, they are washing their hands of it. The state government says these people are to dangerous for us, too violent for us, we don’t want their anti-social behaviour in our public housing and we don’t have a way to address it.
“Their solution is, let’s wait until they want to see a better way.”
