State pledges almost $20 million for specialist DV court in Brisbane

The state government has committed $19.7 million to establish a specialist domestic and family violence court in Brisbane.
The court, which will take four years to be rolled out, will ensure victims won’t be further traumatised by proceedings.
“It means people who experience domestic and family violence are supported through the legal system, instead of getting lost in it,” Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman said.
In 2020-21, the court dealt with almost 1,900 applications for domestic violence orders and more than 2,200 charges of contravening a domestic violence order.
Specialist domestic and family violence courts currently operate in Southport, Beenleigh, Townsville, Mount Isa and Palm Island.
“Specialist courts are shown to be effective in prioritising the safety of victims, holding perpetrators accountable and working to promote changes in attitudes and behaviour,” Ms Fentiman continued.
“The measures include dedicated magistrates, specialised duty lawyers and prosecutors, as well as a skilled registry, and a range of support services which are located on site.”
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk made the announcement at the Small Steps 4 Hannah Gala Ball at the weekend.
