Morcombes’ scathing response to ‘morally corrupt’ movie about son’s death

The parents of Daniel Morcombe have described the makers of a new film, reportedly based on the schoolboy’s death in 2003, as “morally corrupt” and “parasites”.
Thomas M. Wright’s crime-thriller The Stranger was reportedly inspired by Daniel’s abduction and death in 2003 and the conviction of his killer 11 years later.
The story doesn’t show the boy or the crime and instead focuses on the suspect and an undercover officer who befriends him.
In a social media post signed off by both of Daniel’s parents, Bruce and Denise, the film was slammed for its “appalling storyline” that profits from Daniel’s death.
“In a twisted way, it also provides oxygen to a sadistic beast by notarising his evil acts,” they wrote. “Individuals who make money from a heinous crime are parasites.”
The family pleaded for supporters to “stay away” from the film and instead consider donating to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.
