Boris Johnson clings to power amid mass resignation of MPs
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is in the fight of his political life as dozens of MPs quit the government.
38 MPs have resigned in the last day, saying Johnson is not fit to govern but the embattled PM says he will not step down from leadership.
It comes a day after two cabinet members, Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid announced their resignations in protest against Johnson’s latest bungle, the handling of a sexual misconduct scandal.
Under Conservative Party rules, Johnson is protected from a vote of confidence for another 11 months after he overcame a ballot triggered last month.
UK correspondent Adam Gilchrist told Spencer Howson many are questioning whether Johnson can even fill the vacancies left by a tide of resignations as the economy faces a possible recession.
“Given the comings and goings and all the Cabinet ministers who’ve have gone off, we thought that Larry the Downing Street cat might get some sort of ministerial post.
“I can’t see how Boris Johnson survives this. Surely it’s any hour now, surely.”
