Census: Almost 40 per cent of Australians have no religion

Australians are less religious than 50 years ago, the latest 2021 Census data has revealed.

54.1 per cent of Australians say they are religious, that’s compared to 87.2 per cent back in 1971.

Almost 40 per cent of Australians say they have no religion.

43.9 per cent identified as Christians compared to 86 pert cent in 1971.

Reverend Anita Monro, principal of Grace College and a QUT academic, says there are a few reasons for the shift, including immigration.

“I also think it’s an indication that people are much more likely simply not to identify with their parents religion or the religion that was their family tradition but are much more open to their own meaning exploration that they may not understand in specifically religious terms.”
