Equal funding arrangement extended as PM looks to health sector reform
The Prime Minister has extended pandemic funding arrangements with the states and territories until the end of the year.
A 50-50 funding split was introduced by the previous Morrison government to help the health and hospital system cope during the pandemic.
Anthony Albanese says the measure will continue for the time being, at a cost of $760 million.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has welcomed the extension, despite it appearing to nix her calls to make the arrangement permanent.
Instead, the Prime Minister has announced a review of funding will take place with a focus on ‘reform’ for the sector.
4BC federal politics editor Michael Pachi told Sofie Formica he’s doubtful a review will go far.
“How many reviews has there been into the health system over the years?” he asked.
“There seems to be a review into everything, whether it be health or whatever else.
“They think a review is a panacea to solving the problems.”
