One of Australia’s biggest book retailers is expanding after a resurgence of interest in the written word.

Dymocks has announced plans for more stores across the country, with a particular focus on growing its operations in Queensland.

The company plans to open 20 stores over the next five years after a bumper 2021 saw an eight per cent rise in sales on the previous year.

Retail Managing Director Mark Newman told Sofie Formica a social media trend can take credit for interest in reading among younger Australians.

Videos with using #BookTok tag on TikTok have amassed billions of views, marking a corner of the platform devoted to reading.

“It’s driving young people into bookshops at the moment so it’s something we’re very happy with, publishers are very happy with.

“There are authors and books that were published five, six years or so ago that have been given a new lease of life through this medium!”
