Boris Johnson survives no-confidence motion but the result could ‘come back and haunt’
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has survived a no confidence motion and will remain in his job despite a damaging vote.
Mr Johnson won the ballot 211 to 148.
4BC’s UK correspondent Adam Gilchrist says that’s a telling result for the UK Prime Minister.
“Technically yes, he’s safe for a year but he has fewer MPs supporting him than Theresa May and six months after, she resigned,” he said.
“This is essentially a sign of a huge number of his own MPs … saying ‘We don’t think you’re up to the job’.
“How does he persuade 40 per cent of them to turn around and start backing him?”
Under Tory rules, Mr Johnson cannot be challenged for leadership for another 12 months.
“I’m pretty sure it’ll come back and haunt him at some point, possibly within six months.”
