Why Anika Wells wants Westfield Chermside to ditch paid parking

The Member for Lilley has renewed her fight against Westfield Chermside’s paid parking as drivers complain of a ‘crab pot’ problem.
Drivers have reported wait times of up to four hours to exit the shopping centre’s busy carpark after nearby Toombul Shopping Centre closed down.
Anika Wells argues a simple way to speed up traffic would be to lift boom gates at the exits.
“This is a huge bugbear of mine: paid parking at Chermside,” she told Neil Breen.
“The ostensible reason they had it in the first place was to stop commuters parking there, there’s no commuters on the weekend.
“If they just lifted the boom gates, that would get people in and out faster.”

Caller Jess told Neil Breen she didn’t think the boom gates weren’t most to blame for a traffic jam she became stuck in at Westfield Chermside.
“I was there but the boom gates were actually lifted,” she said.
“What was taking the most time was actually getting out from those lights onto Gympie Road and out on the side streets and everything.”
