Senator vows Australia will repair strained relationship with France
Questions have been raised about Australia’s ongoing relationship with France, after French President Emmanuel Macron was re-elected to a second term in office.
In November, a fiery President Macron accused Scott Morrison of lying about the scrapped $90 billion submarine deal.
LNP Senator James McGrath was asked about repairing the diplomatic relationship between the two countries, if the Coalition wins the federal election.
“France is important to us, especially as it is one of the leading countries of the European Union,” he told Bill McDonald, filling in on 4BC Drive.
“Prime Minister Morrison has been very strong in his rebuttal of President Macron’s view there, President Macron was annoyed that we were dumping the contract and shifting to nuclear powered submarines as part of a trilateral agreement with the US and the UK.
“Both sides since then have made quite strong noises, about working together moving forward.
“When people are a little bit cranky, sometimes you’ve got to take them on the journey with you.”
