‘Level the playing field’: Council election spending caps on the agenda
The Queensland government is investigating spending caps for mayors, candidates and third parties for all council elections in Queensland.
The cap would limit the amount that candidates can spend in their campaigns to $250,000 in Brisbane and $222,000 for the Gold Coast.
But registered third parties such as unions would be able to spend the combined cap of every mayoral race in the state.
Labor leader of the council opposition and Deagon ward councillor, Jared Cassidy, says they supported spending caps generally.
“I, and the Labor councillors support spending caps, this has been talked about for a fair while,” he told Peter Psaltis filling in on 4BC Drive.
“It was first bought up before the last council election and has now been worked through and this paper has been released.
“We support generally, spending caps, because what they do is level the playing field.”
