New car prices continue to rise with no end in sight to product shortages

David Berthon

Many new cars have had significant price rises this year as a result of increased transport and shipping costs and global parts shortages.

Already in the first quarter we’ve seen prices lift on Renault, Skoda, Jeep, Volkswagen, Isuzu, Mazda and BMW models and this week Suzuki Australia announced increases on its popular small vehicle range – the small Ignis SUV and Baleno hatchback ranges have risen by $750 while its small Vitara SUV range has risen by $1,000 – the entry two-wheel drive now kicking off at $26,490. Suzuki Vitara sales have nose-dived this year down 68 percent.

On the other hand, the Baleno hatchback is now the company’s best seller with sales up 41 percent. The popular Swift hatch and small Jimny SUV models have each risen by $1,000 – the entry Swift GLS manual now from $21,490, the Jimny Lite manual kicking off at $28,490.
