Does Queensland need an upper house in parliament? An expert weighs in

Scott Emerson

Queensland remains the only state in Australia without an upper house in parliament.

Today marks 100 years since the abolition of the legislative council.

Griffith University political expert Dr Paul Williams says law in Queensland is made by Cabinet executive, rather than parliament.

“I clearly think it’s a deficit, it’s a democratic deficit,” he told Scott Emerson.

He says there is a need for a second chamber and that there is a “broad and indirect link” to the integrity issues plaguing the government.

But he believes a referendum on whether to introduce it again wouldn’t have the community support.
