The longer term vision for the NRLW as league announces expansion

wide world of sports

The NRLW is expanding with more teams and increased pay.

In 2023, there will be 8 teams, and in 2024, there will be two more teams on board.

Australian Rugby League commissioner Kate Jones spoke to Peter Psaltis about her vision for the future.

“It’s grown immensely since 2018, we have copped a bit of criticism from others that said the AFL has expanded more quickly, but I think you have to look at the closeness of the matches that we are seeing in rugby league, compared to AFL, and I think we have made the decision.”

She says she’d love to see all of the women involved taking a full-time wage for rugby league, but she acknowledged there’s a way to go.

She also revealed when she watched the State of Origin women’s game live on Channel 9, and why it made her emotional.
