‘Act of betrayal’: Energy Minister hits out at NSW counterpart over coal-fired plant closure

Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor is calling out his NSW counterpart after a surprising coal-fired power plant announcement.

Origin Energy will shut Australia’s largest coal-fired power plant seven years early, with the Eraring facility in the NSW Hunter region now set to close by August 2025.

NSW Energy Minister Matt Kean said Origin’s decision was months in the making, with plans to build the largest battery in the Southern Hemisphere.

His federal counterpart told Ray Hadley he only found out about it last night.

“Letting the federal government know in a timely way would be helpful, and that didn’t happen here and it is disappointing.

“It’s delusional to think that a two-hour battery of 700MW can replace this coal-fired power station.”

“Keeping you in the dark over this is disgraceful!” Ray said.
