WATCH | Queensland Youth Symphony brings Kyan’s composition to life
The heartbroken parents of Kyan Pennell have heard their son’s bittersweet final gift at his funeral.
Kyan tragically died on January 31 in an accident, leaving behind sheet music he’d written.
His parents, Amanda and Ian were unable to read his work and had never heard the composition.
In a moving gesture, the Queensland Youth Symphony stepped in to finish and record the work so it could be played at Kyan’s funeral.
Queensland Youth Orchestra’s Director of Music and conductor Simon Hewett told Neil Breen there was no hesitation to help.
“The minute we heard about Kyan’s tragic death, we just wanted to do anything we could to commemorate his extraordinary but short life and give his family something to remember him by.
“Everyone at QYO stepped up and within a few days we had a rehearsal organised, a recording organised.”
Mr Hewett said while there was some work to get the piece ready, it’s entirely Kyan’s work shining through.
“All those notes, all those harmonies and melodies you’re hearing, that’s Kyan’s voice.
“We were just really happy to preserve it in some way.”
