Minister deflects ‘excitable commentary’ on Scott Morrison’s leadership
Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley has hosed down speculation of concerns within Cabinet about Prime Minister Scott Morrison leading the Coalition to the federal election.
It’s been a tumultuous week in politics for Mr Morrison amid texting scandals and recent bad polls.
Scott Emerson asked Minister Ley if Mr Morrison’s leadership was in trouble.
“No it’s not … I have been a member of three cabinets, under three Prime Ministers, and I can honestly say, Scott Morrison’s leadership in the current Cabinet is the strongest, without being at all critical of anyone else, I wouldn’t do that.
“But it is strong and the Cabinet itself is united and determined and absolutely getting on with the job.”
She said speculation goes on in any election year, but she “wasn’t paying attention to it”.
Scott: Well you say Cabinet members are getting on with the job, but obviously one of your colleagues thinks their job is to leak to the media, it’s pretty damning when conversations happening in Cabinet seem to be directly going to some journalists.
Minister Ley: I am not going to comment on conversations or non-conversations, I am not at all worried about the Cabinet because I know from sitting at that table how well it is working. You get a lot of this white noise in the background, and quite a lot of excitable commentary and I am just not going to be distracted by it, because that’s not what I am here for.
