Australia to end offshore processing of illegal arrivals in Papua New Guinea

Gary Hardgrave

Australia will end offshore processing in Papua New Guinea by the end of this year.

From January 1, Papua New Guinea will take full responsibility for illegal immigrants who attempted to reach Australia by boat.

They’ll be offered a pathway to permanent settlement or transfer to Nauru.

Home Affairs Ministers Minister Karen Andrews told Neil Breen the move is designed to stop people smugglers.

“People who attempt to come here illegally will never, ever, ever settle here.

“The Coalition government have been very strong on our policies here; there have been no changes to that.

“We certainly don’t want to see a repeat of what happened when Labor was last in government.”
