Rugby league legend Tony Currie says the “cupboard is nearly running dry” in Queensland for future rugby league players coming through the ranks.

Asked about Maroons coach Paul Green parting ways with the QRL, he said he understands their position.

“We are in really troubling times here, Peter,” he told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports.

“When I say that, I mean that I honestly believe that the Queensland Rugby League production line is running dry, and I really feel we are struggling to find quality Queensland players that can take it to NSW in the next 5 years.

“I feel that that is an issue where the Queensland Rugby League need to have a full time coach to mainly get around and make sure the proceeding years are looked after.”

He said it was a fact that the “cupboard is nearly running dry of Queensland rugby league players of quality Origin standard” and he was outspoken about why it was happening.

Currie said there needs to be “layers of development” where junior players are nurtured, and the AFL is “so far ahead”.
